If you’re looking for a small-town getaway packed with Southern charm, historic homes, and good eats—then let me introduce you to Minden, Louisiana.

Just a quick 4.5-hour drive from the DFW metroplex, my husband and I snuck away for a weekend visit with my sweet friend Sara McDaniel of Simply Southern Cottage.

We stayed in one of her beautifully restored properties, participated in her 5k for Phillip’s Cottage, and soaked up all the hospitality this hidden gem of a town has to offer.

Staying at The Villas at Spanish Court in Minden, Louisiana

Let’s talk about where we stayed because it was absolutely next level. Sara has transformed a historic motor court into The Villas at Spanish Court, and each villa is its own little slice of heaven.

We had the pleasure of staying in the one named “Penney,” a tribute to J.C. Penney, and y’all—it was an absolute dream.

The design was whimsical and feminine, with butterfly-themed decor throughout that made it feel like a little fairytale retreat.

But the charm didn’t stop at the decor. Every villa has its own kitchenette, making it super convenient for a cozy weekend stay.

And it’s the details that make the experience feel so special—think lavender-scented diffusers that greet you the moment you walk in the door and luxurious Niven Morgan hand soap, body wash, and bath products in the bathroom.

Out back of each villa is a sweet sitting area with solo stoves for a relaxing evening around the firepit listening to the frogs in the creek just behind.

Not a single detail has been overlooked. It truly felt like we were staying in a high-end boutique hotel with all the comforts of home. You can tell this was a labor of love.

Running the 5K for Phillip’s Cottage

One of the highlights of the trip was participating in the 5k for Phillip’s Cottage, a cause close to Sara’s heart. This was actually the first race my husband and I have ever done together, and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

The weather was crisp, the vibe was friendly and laid-back, and the whole morning just felt full of purpose. The race benefits the Phillip’s Cottage initiative, which you can hear more about over on my podcast interview with Sara McDaniel. We left feeling energized and inspired by the heart behind the project.

Meeting Up with Creative Friends

As if the weekend couldn’t get any better, we also met up with my sweet friend Summer Hammons of Hammons Nest.

We popped into a few of Minden’s antique stores—Heavenly Treasures and Possiblities, because let’s be honest, I can’t resist a good vintage find—and had a blast catching up and treasure hunting.

Small towns like Minden are brimming with stores like these.

We had an absolute blast shopping with our hubbies in tow and rounded out the afternoon with a delicious lunch at a local favorite, Geaux Fresh, a light and flavorful local favorite with a healthier twist. Everything was made with care and full of flavor. It’s easy to see why the locals love it so much.

Local Eats: Crawfish & Fresh Fare

No trip to Louisiana is complete without some crawfish, and my husband was on a mission to find the best. We ended up ordering from The Crawfish Hole #2, which came highly recommended—and it totally lived up to the hype. Perfectly seasoned, spicy, and fresh.

Another “perk” of staying at the Villas at Spanish Court is the coupon for a FREE coffee at the BrickStreet Coffee Shop! This local hotspot is the perfect way to start your day!

This town is full with beautiful, old homes that make you want to park the car and just walk. Here are a couple of them.

One of the real showstoppers is the Fuller House, lovingly restored by Sara.

It’s the kind of place that makes your jaw drop the moment you walk in. She was even featured on Hometown Kickstart on the HGTV Magnolia Network, where her work brought national attention to this quiet little corner of Louisiana.

Sara’s journey started with the renovation of her original cottage—Simply Southern Cottage—which gained the attention of national publications like Better Homes & Gardens, Southern Lady, Cottages & Bungalows, American Farmhouse Style, Southern Living, House Beautiful, and even Forbes.

She’s truly built something special, and it’s impossible not to be inspired by all that she’s done to breathe new life into these properties and into the community.
